Pixel FAQs
Pixel FAQs
Why is the building called Pixel?
Pixel was derived from the initials PCCl, representing Penzance Creative Cluster. We were tasked with creating a ‘unique and distinguishable’ brand identity for the building. We felt Pixel was strong, memorable, succinct and echoed a creative intent. The façade of the building is also illuminated, which at night will create a tiny beacon of light on the Penzance skyline.
Does Pixel imply it is only for digital or desk based creatives?
No, not at all. Pixel is a multi-disciplinary creative building. It is open to all creative practices from potters to photographers, architects to artists, jewellers to journalists. All are welcome. We ask only that you come with an open mind and an inclusive attitude.
What are the lease / licence terms?
Private studios will be offered on a lease basis with an end date of 31 October 2030. The minimum term is 12 months and after that you can leave at any time by giving 3 months notice. Shared studios will be offered on a licence basis with a 12 month contract. Coworking and dedicated desks will be offered on a licence basis with a monthly rolling contract.
Is sub-letting allowed?
Unfortunately not. However, we actively encourage sharing of studios. This makes them more affordable and help keeps the building buzzy and vibrant. If you are interested in sharing a studio come and talk to us.
What types of space does Pixel offer?
We have large shared studios and private studios of all sizes for both clean and messy practices; a design studio with dedicated desks; a coworking space; meeting rooms; event spaces; gallery space; lounge and lots more.
Do you have to be a member to book a meeting room, event space or gallery space?
No they are open to anyone to book but members get a 25% discount on the rates.
Do I have to submit a portfolio of my work?
No, we will not be making any “quality” assessments of your work. We want the building to be inclusive, diverse and vibrant. Inclusivity should mean a craft-maker, a fine artist and a videographer can all co-locate happily, as long as their values are consistent, even though the perception of their work may be different.
Do you actively curate the mix of businesses in the building?
Yes we believe in active management to promote variety and diversity. So we may decide not to accept an application if we have an over-concentration of a certain practice within the building, or it isn’t a good fit, or isn’t consistent with the values and standards of our member community.
Does the building have 24/7 access?
Yes, but this will depend what type of space you occupy within the building. Coworking for example can only be accessed during working hours. Studios can be accessed anytime.
Will you have people onsite?
Yes, our host team run the building day-to-day and will be onsite from 08.30 – 17.30 Monday to Friday and whenever there are events on outside those hours.
Do the studios have water and wash-up facilities?
Yes all the ground floor studios have sinks in them and the others have access to shared facilities.
Are the studios suitable for acoustic work?
Yes. They are not soundproof but the internal walls are rated at 57 dB Rw which is about the level of a group of people having a conversation (like in a restaurant). So this would be inaudible. We are happy for you to upgrade the acoustic properties of your studio, as long as it is returned to its original condition at the end of your contract.
Can you have a kiln in the building?
Absolutely yes. The ground floor studios have upgraded fire separation and concrete floors so are best suited to locating kilns.
Is there a loading bay for deliveries to/from the building?
As part of the public realm works that are happening at the top of Causewayhead there will be a new loading area for delivery vehicles. These works are not part of the Pixel build contract but we understand are happening in early 2025.
Is there level access to the building?
Yes the north entrance has level access from the street. Internally the building has full disabled access including a lift to the upper floors and level access across all floors.
